Major Facelift for the Essig House

The exterior of the Essig House on Highland Road has been gradually deteriorating. The original log structure was badly in need of a lot of work and materials. Our community of Old Dry Road Farm members, volunteers and friends have lent support in preparing the south side oft the building for the upgrades and with membership dues, donations and fundraising.

The Essig House July 2024: new German siding, windows, doors and porch roof

Project Narrative: Things finally came together, and the board voted to begin the process of rehabilitating the farmhouse. A volunteer effort tackled the removal of two layers of asphalt shingles that covered the façade. Underneath that was weather-worn and deteriorated German siding that was also removed. The original logs were found to be in relatively good shape although the chinking was mostly crumbling. Rehabilitating the logs and chinking would have been far too labor-intensive and costly.

A crew from Mountain View Building showed up on July 3, 2024 and proceeded to install metal roofing on the front and back porch. All three entry doors and seven windows were replaced. The wall was covered in oriented strand board to stabilize the logs and finally, new German siding was installed and stained a medium brown.

Our thanks to Preston Weaver and his crew for squeezing us into his schedule and for the high quality of workmanship we always received in the many projects he has completed for us since 2012.

We anticipate eventually restoring the west and north sides of the farmhouse in a similar fashion when we are in a financial position to do so.
