Old Dry Road Farm registered with the PA Department of Agriculture to help monitor the spread of the Lanternfly by placing sticky bands on Tree-of-Heaven (Ailanthus altissima) trees that are present on the land that we manage.

The sticky bands were changed every two weeks starting May 1, through August this year and an online report of the findings was made to the Department of Agriculture each time the bands were changed. There were no lanternfly instars (developmental stages between moults) captured on the sticky bands.

We have registered with the PA Department of Agriculture’s 2018 program to participate in the removal of the host tree (Ailanthus altissima).

The Pennsylvania Artists and Blacksmith’s Association held their 5th annual event at the Hottenstein barn on Saturday August 5, 2018. The event was well attended with a crowd estimated at + 200 visitors throughout the day. The Hottenstein buildings were open and we enjoyed greeting many visitors, most for their first time and got positive feedback for our efforts to keep history alive through the school programs and preservation of the historic buildings.

In addition to the nesting box in the Hottenstein Barn, a second box was installed on the Staudt Barn. We checked the boxes early in June and found that this year there were no nesting barn owls.
